Try it with Oregon hazelnut syrup or house vanilla for an extra sweet kick. Lucky for fans of brewed beans, that translates into a "latte" cool coffeehouses (pun definitely intended). Espresso Profeta
Think savory hand pies, roast lamb sandwiches, and black rice porridge with pickled okra. Back in the mid-'90s in Chicago, Doug Zell and Emily Mange dreamt of achieving percolated perfection with every pour and 22 years later their regulars in six cities, including LA, would swear they succeeded. Their single origin coffees are sourced around the world (Kenya, Burundi, Ethiopia, Colombia and Peru) and bought direct from celebrated and sustainable family farms, small co-ops and estates. Then it’s off to the Roasting Works Intelligentsia runs, which are often located in the cities they service to ensure maximum freshness. While the coffee quality is consistent across the board, the cafes vary wildly. Hollywood is sleek while Pasadena looks like a funky industrial loft.

That said, places like Palo Alto, San Francisco, and Santa Cruz are also home to Verve coffee shops. While many people like to order Verve coffee beans online for their homemade morning brew, having an excuse to get out of the house and hit up a local coffee shop chain is always nice. Part coffee shop, part subscription service, Dayglow is all about showcasing its favorite independent and up-and-coming roasters from around the world. You can find them stashed in the monthly coffee boxes, or drop by either the Silver Lake or West Hollywood locations for a full espresso menu, neon-lit settings and, of course, whatever the daily selection of these faves might be.

A cup of joe is perhaps the most classic and universally loved morning ritual shared by people all across the globe. While some people refuse to give up on their Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts order, branching out and trying locally owned and independent coffee shops can open your eyes to the magical world of quality coffee. Whether you stick with a simple cold brew to get your day going or you prefer a milky latte, coffee is far more complex than most people realize. That said, while trendy spots don't always serve the best food and drink, Alfred remains pretty consistent and hasn't lost sight of the importance of quality goods. The iced vanilla latte is one of the most popular drinks, but if you're looking for a bit of zen with your caffeine boost, order the iced lavender latte. Depending on which location you visit, Alfred also has breakfast items like bagels and cream cheese, breakfast sandwiches, yogurt and granola, and breakfast burritos.
Two Guns Espresso
The Manhattan Beach shop has a more surf-inspired ambiance, while the Culver City goodboybobs is a bit more industrial. In addition to coffee and tea, visitors can also order a variety of chapati wraps, pastries, and tartines. The Culver City and Santa Monica locations also serve wine, beer, cider, and mimosas in the afternoon. Enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning and a glass of champagne in the early evening. In addition to whole milk, patrons can also opt for plant-based milks like oat milk and almond milk. When it comes to food, choose between breakfast favorites like the sausage and egg sandwich or the savory and sweet chicken and waffles.
This spacious and stylish coffee destination is busy no matter the time of day—no surprise, seeing as it’s one of Highland Park’s top shops to grab a cup and a croissant, now with a second location in Downtown L.A.'s Fashion District. The original location's tall ceilings, tiled floors and diverse seating options spread between tables, couches and a patio out back make for a fashionable setting, while the toasts, breakfast burritos, and Sugarbloom Bakery pastries make for a solid meal. The espresso blend rotates frequently, but teas and specialty coffee drinks remain more or less the same. We love the Figueroa, made with sweetened condensed milk, espresso, milk and cinnamon, topped with a Maria Cookie. Hyper curated and hyper technical, Highland Park's Kumquat Coffee is a caffeine lover's paradise. They also offer fresh pastries and breakfast burritos, just in case all that caffeine isn't fuel enough.
Just like the name suggests, La La Land Kind Cafe is known for serving up some of the best vibes and coffee in the city. With three locations in Los Angeles, La La Land Kind Cafe can be found in Santa Monica, Calabasas, and The Grove in West Hollywood. The white and yellow interior is modern yet aesthetic and warm, and to say the service is friendly would be an understatement. Coffee Manufactory started in 2016 when it roasted two blends for Tartine Bakery, but has since expanded, opening up shops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seoul, South Korea.
Coffee, and lots of it, preferably paired with a quick breather at one of the city's best coffee shops. Whether it’s paired with a fantastic brunch or enjoyed as midday break from work, a good java spot is as necessary for Angelenos a solid neighborhood taco stand. This grab-and-go coffee shop is a charming and quaint neighborhood spot that specializes in traditional espresso shots and concoctions. While most people order and take their goods on the go, there are a handful of tables inside where you can post up for an hour while you read a good book or catch up with a friend.
The modern coffee shop is situated right in the heart of Melrose Avenue in the Melrose Arts District, and you'll always find an array of locals and visitors popping in for a shot of espresso. Upon walking in, the first thing to greet guests is a wall of greenery that creates the outline of a sasquatch. The curved white booths are contemporary while still being inviting, and the shop can easily be used for working or hanging. The New Orleans-style coffee is by far the most popular item on the menu. It's definitely on the sweeter side, but if you prefer to start your morning with a little sugar, it's the perfect drink no matter what time of year. Alchemist Coffee Project also has different kinds of sandwiches and toasts.
Try it with an English muffin and housemade jam or overnight oats for a great morning pick-me-up. Set in the heart of Chicago's funky Wicker Park neighborhood, The Wormhole Coffee offers everything from classic lattes to a brew called the Koopa-Troopa, a peanut butter mousse and dark chocolate latte, which sounds like heaven in a cup. With syrups and sauces all made in-house or sourced locally, Chicagoans are getting their caffeine fix and then some. And while there are coffee shops that can do the job on seemingly every corner, some are simply cooler to hang out in than others — and don't forget, studies suggest that drinking coffee (and alcohol) may help you live longer. Is a city constantly on the move, even if it's only at a glacial pace on the freeway.

In 2018, Yonnie Hagos and Ajay Relan first opened in the historically Black neighborhood of View Park-Windsor Hills, hoping to help locals connect, caffeinate and continue the climb towards success. Since then, after being featured on HBO's Insecure, the coffee shop is now backed by showrunner Issa Rae, who's helped Hilltop expand to Inglewood, Eagle Rock and Downtown. And Eagle Rock locations have plenty of tables and a few charging outlets apiece, while the Inglewood shop’s lofted couch seating is more conducive to casual morning or afternoon hangs.
Goodboybob has three Westside locations in Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica, and Culver City. The Santa Monica location opened in the summer of 2017 and has been a local favorite ever since. The laid-back yet cozy setting is ideal for catching up with friends over a cappuccino or for setting up a relaxed business meeting or interview. The outdoor patio at the Santa Monica location also allows patrons to soak up some sun while they get their caffeine fix. These down under wonders have been causing quite a stir since they relocated from Sydney.
Despite being incredibly trendy and very "LA," Alfred is known for making some pretty solid brews. There are locations scattered all throughout the city from Malibu to LA's Koreatown. The original Alfred opened up on Melrose Place before quickly expanding and becoming a trendy coffee shop on social media and a celebrity favorite. Everyone from the Kardashians to Nick Jonas has been spotted at Alfred. When you walk into the original location of this San Francisco coffee shop, you're greeted by tons of natural light, clean lines, and a super fancy, retro-designed Kees van der Westen espresso machine. Try the Short Strand espresso, made to be sweet with notes of toffee and milk chocolate, or the Wind & Sea blend, which was inspired by a long Ocean Beach surf session and, according to Andytown, is best enjoyed on a foggy day — good thing San Francisco has no shortage of those.
